As we all know, COVID-19 has been one of the most challenging times in our lives as a society and as individuals. Beginning with the global shutdown, COVID-19 put many hardships on everyone. From sudden unemployment to mental and physical health issues. Personally, this has been challenging from the beginning. In March 2020, over spring break, it became unclear if we would be returning to in person classes. Unfortunately, the rest of the semester was fully online making it difficult for students to transition suddenly into a completely new and foreign form of education. After finishing that weird semester, I applied and was accepted into the Nursing Program at PPCC. I didn’t know what to expect for the Fall 2020 semester and I became stressed and worried about how I would be able to succeed. My first semester in nursing school was going to be during a world-wide pandemic where I couldn’t even be within six feet of my classmates or see their faces underneath the masks. Luckily, our classes began in person so it made it easier for us all to get to know each other and begin this new and weird journey together. Throughout the semester, cases of COVID-19 began to get worse and lectures gradually transitioned to fully online and lab was still in person up until Thanksgiving break. The rest of the semester was online unfortunately, just like the previous semester, but we all had experience with this type of transition which made it easier. COVID-19 has definitely made school even more difficult but I try to look at the positives and focus on my success and my health. I had been lucky enough to stay healthy and not contract the virus since it began, even when I work in the health field and was around it frequently. This lasted until the week of finals for the Fall 2020 semester. I began to get sick with what I just thought to be a cold but my weekly COVID-19 test for my work became positive. I now had COVID-19. What was worse was that I got it right before finals. I was sick and exhausted and all I wanted to do was sleep but I couldn’t. Studying for my nursing finals while suffering from COVID was the hardest thing I have done in a while. I had to force myself to focus in order to retain the large amounts of material for three different classes. I had to pass these finals no matter what. After a long, long week, I was finally done and had successfully gotten through my first semester of nursing school! It was a hard and long journey with a very difficult ending, but I had made it. Now it is time to do it all over again, hopefully this time without contracting COVID-19. Here’s to a successful semester for every student and just know that while our situations are all different, we are all in this together!
